How do I clean and care for my hardwood floor?
How do I clean and care for my hardwood floor?

Keep your hardwood floors looking brand-new!

Spend more time enjoying your hardwood floors rather than scrubbing away at them! Cleaning and maintaining your Preverco hardwood floors has never been this easy. With just a few affordable products, you can quickly get your wood flooring looking spotless like the day they were installed.

The basics for both pre-finished and pre-oiled hardwood floors

Above all, it is important to sweep hardwood floors regularly—even daily, if you lead an active lifestyle. This frequency is also recommended if you wear your shoes inside or have pets and/or young children who play with toys like trucks on the floor. Remember, the more traffic you have on your hardwood floors, the greater the chance of scratching caused by small or medium-sized dust particles. By sweeping your floors on a daily basis, you can avoid some surface scratching.

Your weekly routine should also include a thorough wiping of your floors using Preverco's cleaning kit, which includes a swivel-head mop, microfibre mop cover, three-piece handle and 700 ml bottle of cleaner, as the products have been tested and are completely compatible with our PreOilTM floors.

The products can be found at authorized Preverco retailers. Never use a damp mop and a bucket, as the excess moisture can damage the wood and the finish.

Always use high-quality products for better cleaning results. The use of lower-quality cleaners may leave a greasy residue on your floor (cloudy film or haze). It can also cause problems or reduce the life of your floor's finish.

If possible, avoid any generic or brand-name product that claims to protect your floor. This type of product leaves a cloudy film or residue, making your floor look damaged.

Here are some FAQs regarding cleaning Preverco hardwood floors:

CAN I USE A MOP WITH A SPRAYER LIKE A SWIFFER® WETJET® OR OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCT TO CLEAN MY PREVERCO FLOOR?

We recommend spraying cleaner on a microfibre pad instead of spraying it on the floor.

MY LOCAL RETAILER DOES NOT CARRY YOUR CLEANER. WHERE CAN I GET SOME?

You can ask your retailer to check Preverco's price list and order it for you. In the near future, you will be able to order it directly on this website.

CAN I USE A MOP AND BUCKET TO CLEAN MY PREVERCO FLOOR?

We do not recommend using a mop and bucket to clean your Preverco hardwood floors. If too much water enters the wood through the cracks in the floor, there is a chance that the flooring could expand and cause a range of problems, including cupping (when the sides of the floorboards curl up) and peeling finish (when the varnish detaches from the boards).

We recommend using the mop found in the Preverco Cleaning Kit.

CAN FLOORS WITH THE WAVE AND BRUSHED TEXTURES BE CLEANED AS EASILY AS THOSE WITH THE REGULAR FINISH?

Textured floors can be cleaned just as easily as our regular products. The same type of finish is applied to all of our products*.

* With the exception of pre-oiled floors.

CAN I USE A STEAM MOP ON PREVERCO FLOORS?

Preverco does not recommend using steam mops. These systems work by shooting steam against a surface and collecting dirt with a cloth mop. Hardwood reacts to its environment and absorbs moisture, which causes it to expand. This process will very likely damage the flooring by causing massive expansion and inflicting permanent damage.

Restoring your pre-finished hardwood floor

The first step is to remove the cloudy film by washing the floor with a mixture of water and vinegar. This process is not a long-term solution. Only do it once or twice.

For each litre of water, add 2 caps of vinegar. Apply a small amount to a cloth and wipe the floor. If this does not work, use a more efficient cleaner. We suggest Finitec's Surface Preparation.

OIL RECOATING BY HAND

  1. Thoroughly clean the floor before starting work using the specially designed Preverco products. Leave to dry and then begin application. (#PE-2000-000-00)
  2. Spread a small quantity of PreOilTM clear oil (#GC-HUIL-000-000) directly on the floor surface of approximately +/-5pi x 5pi.
  3. Use a clean and dry cotton cloth or sponge.
  4. Ensure uniform application so as to obtain a fine film of oil on the surface. Leave to penetrate and wipe off any excess with a cloth in order to leave only a very thin coat.
  5. Let dry for 30 minutes between each coat and repeat if necessary.
  6. Proceed section by section over the entire floor surface, making sure that all areas being covered are uniform.
  7. Pay particular attention in corners and edges along the walls.
  8. Allow to dry completely for 16-24 hours before circulating freely and replacing furniture.
  9. To ensure safety, dispose of all oil-soaked cloths in a bucket of water. Otherwise, soiled linen may ignite spontaneously.

OIL RECOATING USING A ROTARY BUFFER

  1. Thoroughly clean the floor before starting work using the specially designed Preverco products. Leave to dry and then begin application. (#PE-2000-000-00)
  2. Use an industrial floor buffer (available on rental).
  3. Use a white buffer pad.
  4. Pour the PreOilTM clear oil (#GC-HUIL-000-000) in a bottle with spout to facilitate the work.
  5. Apply directly onto the wood floor in small quantities (size of an egg).
  6. Position the centre of the buffer pad on the oil.
  7. Divide and work the room in sections of approximately 50 ft2.
  8. Apply the oil manually in corners and around edges of the room.
  9. Apply a second coat if needed, waiting 30 minutes between coats.
  10. Leave to dry completely for 16-24 hours before circulating freely and replacing furniture.
  11. To ensure safety, dispose of all oil-soaked cloths in a bucket of water.

REPAIRING SCRATCHES AND STAINS

Repair is necessary when imperfections such as large scrapes, scratches or stains become visible on the floor.

REPAIRING SUPERFICIAL SCRATCHES

  1. Thoroughly clean the surface to be repaired before starting work using the specially designed recommended products. Leave to dry and then begin application. (#PE-2000-000-00)
  2. Apply the stained oil (choose the colour matching your floor among PreOilTM oiled finishing products) into the cavity using an applicator crayon (or a fine brush).
  3. Let dry for approximately 1 minute.
  4. Wipe the repaired area gently using a perpendicular motion so as to maintain all the imperfection's stain colouring.
  5. Adjust and redo again if needed.
  6. Leave to dry completely for approximately 24 hours.
  7. Apply a coat of PreOilTM clear oil using a sponge or other type of manual applicator.
  8. Wait for 1 minute.
  9. Wipe progressively around the repair so as to assure uniformity of the repair coat.
  10. Wait for 30 minutes and apply a second very thin coat of oil, over a larger surface around the repair.
  11. Buffing with a white Scotch-Brite-type pad may be necessary 30 minutes after the last application to equalize the floor's lustre.
  12. To ensure safety, dispose all of oil-soaked cloths in a bucket of water.

REPAIRING DEEP SCRATCHES

  1. Thoroughly clean the surface to be repaired before starting work using the specially designed products. Leave to dry and then begin application. (#PE-2000-000-00)
  2. Using 120-150 grit sandpaper, sand the perimeter of the area to be repaired lightly, making sure to minimize damage to the stain colour.
  3. Apply the stained oil (choose the colour matching your floor among PreOilTM oiled finishing products) into the cavity using an applicator crayon (or a fine brush).
  4. Let dry for approximately 1 minute.
  5. Wipe the repaired area gently using a perpendicular motion so as to maintain all the colour on the imperfection.
  6. Adjust and redo again if needed.
  7. Leave to dry completely for approximately 24 hours.
  8. Apply a coat of clear oil using a sponge or other type of manual applicator.
  9. Wait for 1 minute.
