Commonly called "GRADES" in the wood industry, Preverco's four "appearances" unveiled in 2013, revolutionized the outdated and confusing terminology. The use of appearances makes it simpler and easier to understand the wonderful world of hardwood flooring. You no longer need to worry about the complex jargon that is far too often used in our industry when talking about grades of wood. (Ex. Select, #1 Common, Select & Best, Character, etc). For the most part, these terms mean little to most... you're not alone!
Wood is a natural resources that contains variations in colour and sometimes in the knots that reflect the tree's age and history. These natural occurrences influence the look of the wood once it is cut into boards that will make up your floor. We use different criteria to classify wood boards:
All of these factors influence the appearance of the boards used in your future floor. They create different looks to suite any taste, style or decor. When you start shopping for flooring, you will be asked to think about, and eventually choose, the appearance (or grade) that you want.
PURE: For a surface that is pure and without too many colour variations. This appearance is perfect for the minimalist, modern, classic and stylish decor!
NUANCE: For a floor with moderate colour variation, this appearance offers a little more character. Because it's quite traditional and adapts to any decor, it is the flooring of choice you'll see in most homes.
Take note that NUANCE XL is a declination of the Nuance appearance with an oversized 7” board width and a greater proportion of 6' to 7’ boards, for a more impressive look.
VARIATION: The name for this appearance speaks for itself, as it provides a colour variation that is much more pronounced. It is the perfect choice to showcase natural materials in your decor. A great choice for the country look but also very chic when used to create an eclectic or Scandinavian-type atmosphere.
VARIATION with KNOTS: As with the previous appearance, it provides a pronounced colour variation with the added variant of knots, revealing the history, age and constitution of the tree the wood originated from. This has always been the quintessential appearance for the country look but is increasingly more in vogue in contemporary, eclectic and traditional decor.
And lastly, listen to your heart and choose the appearance according to what really moves you!
The "GRADES" used by hardwood floor manufacturers are not regulated by an industry standard. As a result, you can't compare one grade name of one manufacturer with another. It's important therefore to be aware and check its "APPARENCE". You should also remember that these appearances are NOT and indicator of product QUALITY. They simply designate the LOOK of a floor. Keep in mind that all Preverco products are manufactured with great attention to detail and with the objective to provide you with the best finished product of the highest quality possible.
